The New Mutants, when training, wear the standard training outfit which consists of a navy blue jumpsuit with a thick, yellow belt that has the X-logo in the centre. The trainees also wear matching yellow gloves and boots with the same X insignia on their shoulders.

Recruitment[]

The New Mutants were formed by Charles Xavier who recruited them once Cerebro detected their recently awakened X-Genes. Once recruited, the young mutants were then brought from their homes to the Institute. In order to formerly recruit them, Xavier and his students left New York in order to visit them at their homes. To locate them, Xavier tracked them down using Cerebro and visited the following to find his new students:

  • Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (Roberto De Costa/Sunspot
  • Ullapool, Scotland (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane)
  • Nova Roma do sul, Brazil (Amara Aquilla/Magma)
  • Cumberland County, Kentucky, USA (Samuel "Sam" Guthrie/Cannonball)
  • Beverly Hills, California, USA (Jubilee Lee/Jubilation)

The new recruits then became teammates with Bobby Drake, Ray Crisp and the then temporary addition, Tabitha Smith, who had already been living at the Institute. During their time in New York, the group grew close with Kitty due to her being the more outgoing of the X-Men and around their own age range.

The New Mutants[]

Growing Pains

At the Institute, the recently recruited young mutants put on a display of their abilities to one another. During this, Tabitha dropped one of her small explosives between Amara, Ray and Jubilee which started a game of mutant themed laser tag between them.

Power Surge

Sam and Rahne accidentally knocked Scott down after the latter tried leaving the Institute to get to a party. Scott then reprimanded the two and reminded Sam that he was to not run in the school to avoid more crashes. Outside, Bobby created a tiny ballerina made of ice which he handed over to Jubilee. The two witness Scott leaving with him yelling at Bobby about ice being all over as he ends up slipping on it but eventually left the Institute grounds.

Days after the party, Bobby and Jubilee walked with each other.

Bada-Bing Bada-Boom

The New Mutants then attended a training session, one which was a rescue themed operation where Kurt was a stranded and trapped victim. Tabitha was then ordered to go down on the stretcher provided to save him though only jeopardised the situation further by creating an explosion to destroy the rocks. Tabitha then tells Kurt his codename should be "Wild Blue Yonder Boy" rather than Nightcrawler. As the session continues, the stretcher rises but Kurt falls out as he teleports up to the trainee and says she lost ten points due to not strapping him down for safety. Growing tired of the constant orders, Tabitha becomes more reckless and rocks the stretcher and continues to activate her power, actions which Logan then berated her for. Due to Tabitha's actions, Kurt then fell from the simulated cliff wall, knocked unconscious but was saved by Scott, Kurt then fell into the water below but was rescued by Logan.

Fun and Games

At the group's party, Jamie spent the time dancing with Jubilee. Rahne mainly talked with Sam and Roberto spoke with Amara. Later, Bobby sat with Sam as Amara walked over to get Sam to dance with her, Amara's actions caused Bobby to be amused but he was then grabbed by Jubilee who wanted him to dance with her.

Adrift

Wanting to make the most out of the snowy weather, The New Mutants spent most of their time outside and used their powers against each other after their original snowball fight escalated. Noticing their situation, Hank went over claiming that their way of a snowball fight was not ideal then joined in with them by throwing much larger snowballs at his students using his beast feet.

On Angel's Wings

At Christmas, The New Mutants attended the party held at the Institute. Jubilee, along with Amara and Kitty open their presents from Jean as Kurt then teleported in view with the intent to try kiss Kitty since he had some mistletoe with him. As Kurt then went in for the kiss, Kitty ended up moving away as the former only ended up landing a kiss on Bobby's cheek instead. Later that day, Storm takes Jubilee, Bobby and Sam to the airport as Ray follows after with Jean, Kitty and Kurt in his car with all of them returning to their respective homes for the holidays.

African Storm

At the Institute, The New Mutants play ball together but are confronted by Hank. The group then admit that Storm never arrived to teach their training session so Hank instead offers to be their substitute until Storm returns. Not wanting the session to be hard to focus on due to the thick, foggy, weather, The New Mutants were then escorted inside as Hank say they are to play a game of volleyball without their powers. As the game starts, Roberto fires a ball into Ray's face as the latter claims that Roberto cheated by using his powers, the group then fight amongst themselves over the situation causing Hank to be thrown out of the room.

Joyride

Wanting to lay off stress and their responsibilities, Jubilee, Sam, Jamie and Bobby began joyriding by taking the Blackbird Jet and the X-Van out of the grounds. Due to Lance being a temporary member of the team at the time and knowing he was originally part of The Brotherhood, the four sought to make sure he got the blame for their misdeeds. Later on, the four came forward about what happened and admitted the truth much to the delight of Kurt who at the time was on probation and had just finished cleaning the mess left by the New Mutants.

Exposed as a mutant[]

Day of Recovery

Due to mutants being founded out by the media, all the mutants at the Institute were forced into hiding with some being captured. Not wanting to be captured, Ray lead most of his new mutant teammates, minus Bobby, into the sewers below and down into the Morlock tunnels to remain safe. Sometime during the aftermath, they safely reunited with their X-Men mentors.

The Stuff of Heroes

Bobby, who hid in a cave with the X-Men, rigged up a makeshift stand made of ice to prop up a TV screen that allowed the group to hear what was said about mutant kind. In order to give Scott and Logan time to decide what to do, Bobby then covered the entrance with his powers but the team were soon forced to disable the incoming helicopters, a plan which involved no civilian lives being harmed. Bobby later assisted in taking down Juggernaut by freezing him in a block of ice during the battle of the dam, the fight was witnessed on TV which caused the President to clear the X-Men of their charges as well as tell the people to be more open-minded of the mutants living among them.

The Stuff of Villains

Due to the destruction of the Institute after mutants were discovered, The New Mutants helped to rebuild it.

Blind Alley

The group, along with Kitty, did their chores around the Institute with the aid of their powers.

X-Treme Measures

Despite Evan's new surge in his powers, he still goes through in attending the skating competition he signed up for in which he was supported by Ray who attended yet had to remind Evan the competition was close to starting. Due to the Morlocks involvement at a production factory, Ray called in the X-Men for their assistance.

Self Possessed

During the Sadie Hawkins Dance, Jamie went with Kitty despite the latter claiming the situation was not a date and was just platonic. After Rogue's powers went haywire, The New Mutants along with their mentors chased the then out of control Rogue through the streets to confront her after they first believed her to be Sabretooth. Jamie's powers were used by Rogue during her attack on the teams involved.

Under Lock and Key

Bobby went with Xavier, Warren, Jean, Scott and Hank much to Hank's dismay as Bobby believed he could handle himself, the former also claimed he would have his teacher's back only to be told that would not be the case. During the fight with the Mystical Arachnid Guardian, Bobby stayed true to his promise and saved Hank.

Cruise Control

The New Mutants and the X-Men, wanting to have a break from their hero duties, took a trip on a cruise, the group ultimately enjoyed themselves by doing various activities until Amara became psychically and mentally unwell and unstable due to being away from the grounds which began causing her to withdraw since she was not close to any land. After Bobby inadvertently causes trouble, Scott yells at him for it but nobody is hurt. Concerned for her health, Tabitha followed after Amara to see what was wrong. After an unlucky chain of events occurred due to Tabitha becoming angered over a woman's remarks and goes to use her powers, her actions are diverted by Jean who uses the aquarium to put out the fire with her telekinesis which is witnessed by the passengers who discover she is a mutant. After the situation seemingly dies down, the passengers become anti-mutant, Tabitha takes the opportunity to go back to Amara. Not wanting to deal with the mutant hating remarks, Bobby freezes the pool forcing the passengers out. After boarding at the San Sebastian Island, Tabitha remains with Amara after learning about her weakness. Soon, a tremor hits causing the group to save the people. After a volcano erupts, Amara runs over to it and drops down into the later, much to Storm's horror, but resurfaces shortly after back at full health with her powers activated. The volcano soon becomes dormant once more as Amara, The New Mutants and the other X-Men are invited to join a party,

X23

The New Mutants had another training session, one which was held by Logan, during which, Bobby comments on the exercises jokingly to Ray who then becomes trapped in a pit. Bobby then claims he'll go find help and rushes out as he runs into Sam, Roberto and Jamie who are also all trapped. Wanting to end the exercise, Bobby instead runs ahead for the target but is berated by Logan. The session abruptly ended as S.H.I.E.L.D helicopters descended onto the grounds. Unknown to them, Hank, Jamie, Sam, Roberto and Bobby are spied upon by X-23. After sneaking inside and not wanting to be seen, X-23 used her devices to knock out those who saw her which included Sam, Amara, Roberto, Jamie and Bobby but they were soon safely woken up after X-23 left the site.

Dark Horizon I and Dark Horizon II

During breakfast and due to rushing late, The New Mutants were forced to use their powers into speeding up the process of getting their breakfast. The New Mutants, mainly Bobby, then assisted tracking down Rogue who was being controlled in finding the tomb of Apocalypse.

Target X

At the Institute as Jean and Scott enter the classroom, the other New Mutants cause chaos inside which soon escalates to all of them not taking the session seriously. Jean then takes notice of Bobby being quiet and praises him for it, though much to the amusement of the other students which causes Jean to discover that it is only an ice sculpture of Bobby, she then orders the class to go search for the real one. After Logan returns to the Institute after his earlier involvement with X-23, Viper and HYDRA, he walks by the classroom and discovers The New Mutants quietly paying attention to Jean and Scott's lesson.
