HYDRA was an international espionage organisation set on wanting world domination. It is the rival agency of S.H.I.E.L.D and the reason for X-23's existence, they were eventually taken down by Logan and his clone daughter, once Viper disappeared, HYDRA was left without a leader though it is unknown if any took over the role and brought the organisation back in the future.

Appearances[]

  • X23 (X-23 and Deborah Risman)
  • Target X (Viper, Omega Red and Gauntlet)

Late 1980s-Present day[]

By the 1980s, HYDRA attempted to recreate the Weapon X program and by 1989, they created an experiment which was dubbed X-01 only for it to fail due to missing factors. Twenty-two attempts later, Deborah Risman successfully created a clone known as X-23 after discovering that the past attempts were failing due to not possessing Logan's healing factor. Sometime after X-23 was created, she was subjected to a harsh upbringing and training to become the perfect weapon, X-23 grew up to hate the man that was used as a template for her creation.

Before she defected, Dr. Risman worked for HYDRA due to the faction giving her creative freedom with her work but after X-23 went rogue, the scientist left and went to S.H.I.E.L.D to admit what she had done and gave them information which she later revealed to Logan though she had also recognised the X-Man to be another experiment known as "Weapon X".[1]

Targeting the X-Men[]

Wanting information, HYDRA ordered X-23 to obtain files on the X-Men only for the former agent to track down a file on Logan instead, she then made her way to the Institute where she dealt with those in her way before engaging in a fight with the man she blamed for her existence, when S.H.I.E.L.D arrives on the scene, Logan, recognising how much broken X-23 was, ordered her to run and hide to avoid capture, X-23 then left before Nick Fury could see her.[2]

Downfall[]

After leaving the Institute, X-23 remained in hiding but spent her time tracking down and locating bases belonging to her former superiors, she destroyed them and left the incident before being noticed, after discovering the location of Viper's base, she attempted to rid of it herself only to go on the run in the area after Omega Red and Gauntlet were sent to deal with Logan, the latter of which discovered his clone was in danger, X-23 then lead her template away to safety.

Logan later attempted to tell X-23 that their current location was a trap and proved himself right when Omega Red and Gauntlet appeared in the area, X-23 was then taken back with Logan to the same base she had attempted to destroy with Logan being secured in a separate room as Viper admitted she had plans to wipe X-23's mind in order to return her to being the perfect weapon she was originally created to be. Elsewhere, X-23 woke up after feigning being unconscious and escape the room to continue with her plan

Once X-23 escaped her confinement, the guard inside the room alerted Viper of the incident and insisted she leave the premise, Viper attempted to escape on her jet only to be found by X-23, the former offered anything she had at her disposal only for her offer to be turned down as X-23 used her detonators to destroy the jet, the ship crashed with only X-23 seemingly being the only survivor.

After S.H.I.E.LD surrounded the area, Fury then questioned Logan for X-23's whereabouts only for Logan to admit that she did not survive, Fury then left the area with his team as Logan then discovered X-23 had survived and would use her apparent death as a chance to live a normal life knowing that she would not be hunted.[3]

Agents[]

Weaponry[]

To aid X-23 and any operatives on missions, HYDRA had many weapons created for her and many of their other operatives where among them were stun devices given to X-23, they were small, round devices that had the ability to malfunction any electronic device and send a person unconscious if applied to them, they also acted as a detonator which could destroy anything they were attached to and were used against Viper when X-23 declared she wanted her freedom before destroying the ship with her former boss still on board.

Trivia[]

  • HYDRA yet again resumes their role as the villainous faction, this however marks their first animated series where they're aware of the X-Men's existence, in other media they're the enemies of the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • HYDRA appeared in the Captain America trilogy as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Endgame.
  • Their most notable and famous catchphrase is "Hail HYDRA!" which has been said whenever the organisation has appeared whether in comics, the films, the shows or its animated shows though Evolution lacks the phrase.
  • It is also unknown if Red Skull exists within Evolution and lead the faction during World War Two. It is possible due to the fact Steve Rogers appeared.
  • In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda and Pietro were members of HYDRA who signed up to be experimented on resulting in their powers although in that film, the twins are not the children of Erik.
  • The full version of their famous catchphrase is the following: "Cut off one head, two more shall take its place, Hail HYDRA!".
  • X-23 and Logan were behind its downfall in Evolution.
