Summary[]
One day, Logan takes Bobby, Sam Kurt, Kitty and Rogue dirt bike racing at the reservoir. To make sure they remain safe due to their location being surrounded by rocks that may be potentially unstable, Logan orders everyone to partner up with someone and Kitty chooses to go with Rogue while Logan keeps an eye on Sam and finally putting Kurt with Bobby. Logan tells the group to keep an eye on their partners as they each drive away with their respective partners in tow. As Rogue and Kitty drive ahead, Kitty's bike continues hitting numerous bumps causing her to panic as she calls out for Rogue but the latter drives ahead and insists she would meet Kitty at the other side of the path, as Rogue drives upwards, Kitty goes down a hill and starts getting the hang of hit. Above, Rogue drives over a piece of rock that becomes unstable and falls down causing Kitty to almost crash, she starts to try divert her bike but loses control and swerves off the side, she falls down below but manages to save herself using her intangibility though her bike crashes and explodes on impact, she grabs onto a rock and goes to hoist herself to safety only for it to break away as she falls a few feet down.
Above, Logan continues his race with Sam. The latter attempts to show off to which Logan goes to do so but stops upon seeing smoke rising from near them, as Kitty wakes up, she sees a figure and mistakes it for Rogue only for the mystery person to drag her out of the way as the unstable piece of rock finally falls. The figure introduces herself as Danielle and mentions she witnessed Kitty's powers and explains that she too is a mutant but does not explain what she can do, only noting that she believes Kitty's ability is much better. As Logan and the others arrive at the scene, Logan checks up on Kitty as Rogue questions what happened as Logan tells her that she left her partner, something he did not want to happen. Afterwards, he takes his students back to the Institute.
Inside the Institute, Kitty eavesdrops on Xavier's conversation with Danielle, the latter explains that the people at Dark Hollow are afraid of her and refuse to associate with her as Xavier assures her that his students and the other X-Men are very welcoming people. Rogue walks over to apologise for the earlier incident but Kitty quickly assures her that it is fine as Xavier telepathically tells everyone to meet in the community room. as Sam and Logan head to the room, the former tricks Logan into a re-match of their earlier dirt bike race. In the community room, Xavier introduces Danielle to the X-Men and New Mutants as he explains hat Danielle is now a student causing everyone to cheer. As Kitty suggests Danielle be her new roommate and walks away with her, Logan asks what Danielle's powers are as Xavier admits it's telepathy but not in the way he or Jean has and that the new student is not emotionally stable. Logan expresses his concern as Bobby sits on Sam's shoulder with Sam running about as the two mimic the dirt bikes noises knowing Logan was nearby, Logan overhears and wonders if the kids should be training instead.
Down in the training area, Jean explains to Danielle and the other students that the aim of the session is to be wary of their surroundings and be careful with unforeseen obstacles. Jean finishes her speech by stating that the other objective is for Bobby, Sam, Roberto and Danielle to get across and claim the flag on the other side, she then hints that the lesson also includes extra surprises. As Sam and Bobby rush ahead, Sam asks Bobby to create an ice bridge to allow them to cross over much easier but Bobby answers that the distance is too long as he yells over for Roberto to instead push the dock, Roberto charges himself up and pushes the pier as it starts to float away. Kitty then phases from below him and admits she is the first surprise that the students must deal with, she then phases his legs through the rocks and keeps him there as she leaves. Sam then runs past Danielle and jumps down into the water below in order to move the dock, he starts using his powers to speed up the process but Kurt teleports him away from Danielle and Bobby who are left stranded. Panicked, Danielle wonders what to do as Bobby insists the two are close enough and starts creating a bridge, the bridge becomes shattered as the two fall into the water, Kitty, Kurt and Jean try get them to continue the course but Danielle becomes overwhelmed and uses her powers. Jean starts floating upwards and becomes unable to stop herself, Kurt goes to save her but is instead teleported elsewhere, Kitty watches on and then screams out as she starts phasing through the group and further down before coming to her senses, all three realise that they are fine as Kurt wonders what just happened to them, Xavier arrives as Storm lands besides him as he explains that the incidents that had just occurred were nothing more than fearful illusions caused by Danielle, still in the water, Danielle looks over.
Inside the Institute, Kitty stands outside Xavier's study and phases her face through the door but quickly backs up as Danielle walks out claiming that the Institute was no better than Dark Hollow as Xavier, Logan and Storm watch from inside. As she continues walking away, Kitty follows after Danielle as the latter admits she does not have full control over her powers and calls herself a freak, Kitty tries assuring her that she is not and that the issues she is having do not matter at the Institute, Danielle continues to be upset as she believes Xavier will kick her out for making nightmares come to life as Kitty tries explaining to her friend that Xavier is not like like that. Still shaken up, Danielle walks away from Kitty.
At night, Kitty notices that Danielle appears restless in her sleep. Danielle begins almost screaming as her powers activate and in turn affects others, Logan begins dreaming about being in the Weapon X program once more and Storm dreams about her room becoming smaller as her claustrophobia starts affecting her. Xavier, who had also fallen victim to Danielle's power, awakens in his dream and heads out to his balcony to watch as a hoard of Sentinels fly towards the Institute though he fully wakes up after one startles him. Wanting for the situation to die down, Xavier then telepathically sends a message to Kitty asking her to meet him downstairs. In the kitchen, Kitty sits down as she explains that Danielle was asleep and was probably unaware of the harm she was causing. Xavier sends her back to bed as Logan asks what to do, Xavier admits that the problem should be sorted as Kitty outside the room, listens in upset.
The next morning, Kitty awakens to find her room empty of Danielle's bed and that the wardrobe is also empty of her roommate's belongings. Furious, Kitty heads downstairs and phases through the kitchen door demanding to know where Danielle is though Xavier has no recollection of the girl Kitty mentions, Scott, Jean, Logan and Kurt all share the same confusion as Xavier mentions nobody in the room knows a Danielle which shocks Kitty. Upstairs, Kitty talks on the phone to a resident of Dark Hollow and asks for someone named Black Eagle though the resident claims nobody goes by that name, Kitty places the phone down as Xavier visits her. Kitty tells her Professor that she is certain that her supposed dreamed up roommate is real but Xavier claims that it was all a dream and that Kitty had been asleep ever since she had been brought home after the biking accident the previous day, he then suggests she sleep more and says he will check on her sometime later, Kitty calms down and goes to try get more sleep.
As she drifts to sleep however, she awakens in a damp version of the Institute as a voice calls out for her begging for help. She follows the voice out of her room and follows a figure, the figure reveals itself to be a ghostly apparition of Danielle still begging for help. As she wakes up, the phone rings and Kitty answers it to hear Danielle's voice coming from it and still begging for her help, the latter claims she does not know where she is as Kitty starts to panic. In the kitchen, Kurt places some mustard on a hotdog but is confronted by Kitty who demands to know more answers on Danielle though Kurt still does not know who she is talking about, Kitty then accuses Kurt of having his mind wiped by Xavier. Still trying to rationalise with his friend, Kurt tries talking to her but she instead asks him to take her to Dark Hollow to prove her point but Kurt tells her that it is too far. Kitty then convinces him to take her as close as possible which Kurt finally agrees to telling her to go get changed.
At the same reservoir as before, Logan and Sam start their rematch which Bobby oversees claiming that the winner will be the first to make it to the North Ride. Bobby then warns them about obstacles as Logan questions what he means though Bobby does not answer, the latter starts the race as the two drive off. As Logan goes one route and Sam goes the other, Ray charges up his electrokinesis and electrifies the water which Sam sees but is able to use the bike to flip over the danger and safely land to continue the race. Roberto takes notice of Logan in the area as he charges up and pushes a boulder over the cliff forcing Logan to head back the other way but notices magma flowing down the same path courtesy of Amara. Managing to get some air after gaining momentum, Logan places his adamantium claws into the side to steady himself as he lands over it.
In Dark Hollow, Kurt and Kitty take in how decrepit and down the town looks, hearing the phone ring, Kitty rushes over to it and answers it to hear Danielle who claims that time is running out and the call ends, Kurt questions what she is doing as Kitty says she had just spoken to Danielle but Kurt explains that it would have been impossible to do so as he reveals that the line was cut causing Kitty to become upset. Still not giving up, Kitty picks up a phone book and finds Moonstar and learns that the address is 760 Maggie Blue Road. The two head for the house and find a man rocking a chair, Kitty tries getting him to speak but he does not answer, Kurt gets him to speak as Danielle's grandfather admits nobody lives in the town anymore due to his granddaughter causing problems and admits his granddaughter is Danielle which surprises both Kitty and Kurt. Kitty wonders where Danielle is but Black Eagle states that Danielle went missing, Kurt then asks when that happened and Black Eagle admits Danielle's disappearance happened two years prior.
As Sam and Logan continue their race, Ray, Bobby, Amara and Roberto stand just ahead holding a lengthy ribbon to indicate the finish line. Starting to become overconfident, Sam charges up his powers and races ahead, he loses control of his bike which explodes and ends up ricocheting off the rocks before landing near the group, Logan then drives through the ribbon making him the winner as Sam wonders if he had won, Bobby throws the ribbon down at him stating that all he won was the group's sympathies. Down below, Kurt tries to convince Kitty that they should leave but Kitty insists she refuses to go back until she rescues Danielle, going so far as to say she and her are friends, she then mentions that Danielle also stated time was running out as Kurt says the same goes for them as the water below them slowly rises. Kitty then realises the rising water and Danielle must be connected and takes Kurt to where her crash happened, Kurt mentions they both get help but Kitty yells at him to go do so as she plans on rescuing Danielle anyways, she then dives below much to Kurt's surprise and phases through the ground. Logan then mentions Sam would have had a better chance at winning the match had he not used his powers as Kurt teleports to the group and tells them they need to help Kitty.
As she continues to phase through the ground, Kitty lands in water and grabs her flashlight to see her surroundings. She then stands up and makes her way through the cave system in order to find Danielle, as she stops, Kitty checks around the area and lights up a spot that reveals Danielle who had kept herself in stasis during her time trapped underground. Recognising her, Kitty places her light into the wall and goes to wake her up before placing her onto a slightly safer area. Danielle wakes up and becomes surprised to see that Kitty was a real person all along as Kitty echoes the sentiment but states that she is unable to phase herself and Danielle out due to them being too far and the latter being too weak. Above, Logan and the group run over to where Kitty had dived from, Logan tries getting Kurt to teleport to the two but he says he cannot do so without knowing where he will be teleporting to, Logan then gets Bobby to freeze some of the water as Sam goes to create a hole but Logan stops him before more damage is done to avoid a cave in.
Below, Kitty tries keeping Danielle awake as the latter wonders how long she had gone for, Kitty mentions too long as some rocks above them crumble down and Kitty assures Danielle that they will be rescued but Danielle loses conscience once more as she clings to Kitty, above, Amara causes magma to flow below that causes the rocks to melt to create a passage down to the two. Kurt teleports down and finds Kitty and Danielle and becomes further surprised to see that the girl was real. Kurt teleports the two to safety as Danielle wakes up in the Institute's medical room, Kitty explains to Danielle that her grandfather is on his way as Kurt talks to Xavier and Logan, Kurt asks how Danielle survived for two years and Xavier explains that due to her powers, Danielle was kept in a form of hibernation statis that kept her alive, Logan jokingly wonders if Danielle's connection to Kitty was an out of body experience, Xavier admits it was and mentions that the situation turned into an unusual friendship.
