The legendary Gems of Cyttorak was once believed to possess mystical properties. However, it now emits a very distinctive radiation.
Erik Lehnsherr spent a long time looking for this gem in order to prefect Asteroid M, for his World of Mutants.
The radiation emitted by the gem is able to advance the development of powers in any mutant exposed to it, which had the effect of enhancing them, granting them full control and allowing them to use their powers without negative drawbacks such as pain. This was to the point of causing their bodies to change in order to adjust to the power boost, such as when Sabretooth was exposed and became more beast-like than human or when Cyclops and Havok were enhanced and gained white hair and more developed bodies.

- As shown by Cyclops and Havok, using too much of their powers too soon after exposure to the gems can negate the transformation, reversing them to their previous state.
- The permanence, of the transformation is also unclear as Mystique and Magneto were shown to have kept their advancement while Sabertooth was shown to have reverted back to his original state in later seasons.
- Based his power level, Cyclops' and Havok's appearance after the exposure as well as his statement to been "fully advanced", it is assumed that Magneto had already exposed himself to the radiation prior the the events of the The Cauldron II.
- It is possible exposing oneself to the radiation twice could have negative effects to mutants based on Magneto's refusal to step into the chamber on Asteroid M.
- This could be the cause of his cellular degeneration and the reason he sought out "Rebirth" later in Operation: Rebirth.
